Young Griots Harlem Film Fellowship

Overview
Young Griots is a research study and fellowship program that supports Black youth (18-25) with roots in Harlem in telling stories about their community. Across the program you will:
- Learn about cultural research rooted in the Black experiences
- Learn documentary film production skills
- Contribute to a documentary to explore the legacy of Black
culture in Harlem - Host a community premiere screening of your film
- Create an action plan to apply what you learned to positively impact your community
The fellowship will be facilitated by Dr. Nkemka Anyiwo (the director of CYPHER) and Andrea Ortega-Williams, an award-winning writer, producer, and director.
Andrea Ortega-Williams, MFA

Andrea Ortega-Williams is an award-winning writer / producer / director who grew up in Harlem. She is drawn to telling stories that spark dialogue, affirm humanity and catalyze change. She has worked in film and television for over a decade shepherding content from conception to delivery for major networks. Her areas of expertise include concept development, casting, directing and managing teams,
budgets and work-flows through the content life-cycle. Andrea’s credits include Stamped from the Beginning (Netflix, 2023), Attica! (Showtime, 2021), Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union (HBO, 2021), Rise Up: The Movement that Changed America (History, 2019), Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (PBS American Masters, 2019) and Through the Fire: The Legacy of Barack Obama (BET, 2017).
